    An Analysis of Oscillator-Based Computations for Image Processing

    Although there has been a vast amount of research into improving CMOS technology and computer architecture to make more powerful and efficient systems, the trends of decreasing sizes and energy and increasing power and speed are plateauing. Major roadblocks hindering the progression of Boolean logic based computing are transistor size, heat dissipation, clock speed, and computation power. This has inspired investigation into new methods for performing, complex operations not based on logic gates, or non-Boolean computations. One such method is coupled oscillator arrays. Instead of a logic gates to compute complex functions, the intrinsic physical properties of the oscillators can be used for computation making them more efficient for non-Boolean computations. This thesis will explore the use of coupled oscillator arrays to perform convolution, a primitive operation that plays a central role in many signal and image processing algorithms. Real-world circuit model parameters will be discussed and their impact on the circuit will be analyzed. In addition, this thesis will show the use of oscillators in Degree of Match (template matching), discrete cosine transform, discrete Fourier transform, Gabor filtering, and image compression.     Synchronization Analysis of Winner-Take-All Neuronal Networks

    With the physical limitations of current CMOS technology, it becomes necessary to design and develop new methods to perform simple and complex computations. Nature is efficient, so many in the scientific community attempt to mimic it when optimizing or creating new systems and devices. The human brain is looked to as an efficient computing device, inspiring strong interest in developing powerful computer systems that resemble its architecture and behavior such as neural networks. There is much research focusing on both circuit designs that behave like neurons and arrangement of these electromechanical neurons to compute complex operations. It has been shown previously that the synchronization characteristics of neural oscillators can be used not only for primitive computation functions such as convolution but for complex non-Boolean computations. With strong interest in the research community to develop biologically representative neural networks, this dissertation analyzes and simulates biologically plausible networks, the four-dimensional Hodgkin-Huxley and the simpler two-dimensional Fitzhugh-Nagumo neural models, fashioned in winner-take-all neuronal networks. The synchronization behavior of these neurons coupled together is studied in detail. Different neural network topologies are considered including lateral inhibition and inhibition via a global interneuron. Then, this dissertation analyzes the winner-take-all behaviors, in terms of both firing rates and phases, of neuronal networks with different topologies. A technique based on phase response curve is suggested for the analysis of synchronization phase characteristics of winner-take-all networks. Simulations are performed to validate the analytical results. This study promotes the understanding of winner-take-all operations in biological neuronal networks and provides a fundamental basis for applications of winner-take-all networks in modern computing systems

    Cultivation and Implementation of Community-Engaged Pharmacy Services in a Free Clinic to Enhance Care for the Medically Underserved

    Partnerships between community free clinics and academic medical centers improve patient outcomes and enhance learning opportunities for students. A community-academic partnership between the Maliheh Free Clinic and the University of Utah College of Pharmacy was formed to fulfill a community need for pharmacy services, to promote interdisciplinary patient care, and to provide an experiential opportunity for students. The Maliheh Free Clinic based in Salt Lake City, Utah provides free primary health care to uninsured individuals who live 150% below federal poverty guidelines. Three pharmacy services were developed and implemented. These include: 1) clinic chart reviews which involve written recommendations following a comprehensive assessment of the patient's chart examining his or her disease states and the appropriateness of his or her medications; 2) medication reconciliations and discussion of pharmacy-related recommendations with patients during Diabetes Day, an inclusive interdisciplinary patient appointment that addresses important aspects of diabetes care; and 3) an insulin dose adjustment service through a collaborative practice agreement with the clinic to monitor a patient's blood glucose levels and adjust his or her medications accordingly on a weekly basis.   Type: Student Projec

    Adopting an Advanced Community Pharmacy Practice Experiential Educational Model Across Colleges of Pharmacy

    Objective: To discuss the experience of sharing an experiential model of education and practice development between two colleges of pharmacy and to provide a framework to guide faculty in this type of collaboration. Case Study: The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy (OSU COP) Partner for Promotion (PFP) program was developed in response to the need for advancing practice in the community pharmacy setting. After successful implementation of this program, the PFP program design and materials were shared, adapted, and implemented at the University of Utah College of Pharmacy (Utah COP). Collaborating faculty developed a framework based on lessons learned through this experience which proposes key guiding strategies as considerations to address prior to embarking on sharing any aspect of an educational program or model between institutions. Each step of the framework is described and applied to the process followed by The OSU COP and Utah COP in sharing the PFP program. Additional considerations related to transfer of educational models are discussed. Results/Conclusion: Sharing the education model and materials associated with the PFP program between institutions has enhanced experiential opportunities for students and helped develop residency training sites in the community setting. In addition, the relationship between the two colleges has contributed to faculty development, as well as an increase in community pharmacy service development with community pharmacy partners at each institution. It is hoped this experience will help guide collaborations between other colleges of pharmacy to enhance education of future pharmacists while positively impacting pharmacy practice, teaching, and research by faculty.   Type: Case Stud

    The first ever anti-football painting: A consideration of the soccer match in John Singer Sargent’s "Gassed"

    The paper presents a discussion of Gassed, a large oil painting by John Singer Sargent displayed at the Imperial War Museum in London. Completed in 1919, Gassed is the major achievement from Sargent’s commission as an official war artist at the appointment of the British War Memorials Committee during the latter period of World War I. Prominent in the painting is a group of soldiers, blinded by a mustard gas attack, being lead to a casualty clearing station tent. In the distant background of the painting, another group of soldiers can be seen kitted out in football attire playing a match. The significance of this football imagery is our point of enquiry. As our title suggests, some recent interpretations regard the painting as offering critical reflection, from the time, about the symbolic links between sport and war. However, while the painting may certainly be left open to this type of viewer interpretation, archival and secondary resource material research does not support such a critical intention by the artist. Yet, nor is there evidence that Sargent’s intention was the projection of war-heroism. Rather, Sargent’s endeavour to faithfully represent what he observed allows Gassed to be regarded as a visual record of routine activity behind the lines and of football as an aspect of the daily life of British soldiers during the Great War

    Identifying barriers to influenza vaccination recommendation adherence in an academic outpatient primary care clinic setting

    Objective: The objectives of this study were to identify barriers to influenza vaccination recommendation adherence and determine potential methods to improve influenza vaccination rates at the outpatient primary care health centers within an academic health care system. Methods: This descriptive study consisted of a questionnaire distributed to primary care providers at outpatient health centers within an academic health care system. The questionnaire assessed provider opinions regarding knowledge of influenza vaccination recommendations, barriers to following clinical guidelines, and methods to decrease delay of guideline use. Influenza vaccination rates at each of the health centers were also determined through documentation of vaccination for adults who visited a primary care provider during the 2011-2012 influenza season. Vaccination rates were used as a potential model for vaccination recommendation adherence. Results: When providers were asked about barriers to guideline implementation, 75.0% stated lack of awareness that guidelines have been released and 62.5% identified insufficient time to learn new guidelines as barriers. When asked which would be useful to more quickly implement clinical guidelines, respondents selected education for providers of new guidelines (79.2%), reminders in the electronic medical record (62.5%), and involvement of other health care professionals including pharmacists (54.2%) as potential strategies. Most questionnaire respondents (70.8%) strongly agreed that well-developed guidelines would improve quality of care at their practice site. During the 2011-2012 influenza season, 26.0% of 67,827 adults with an office visit at all outpatient health centers had documentation of administration of an influenza vaccine. Conclusion: Influenza vaccination rates at the outpatient primary care health centers at this academic health care system represent an area for improvement. Provider perceived barriers to clinical practice guideline implementation and adherence at the health centers include lack of awareness of new guidelines and lack of resources such as time and personnel to follow all recommendations. A health care system-wide process needs to be created to better identify strategies to improve adherence to influenza vaccination recommendations and vaccination documentation

    Design of an Integrated Cotton Picking System for Small-Scale Indian Agriculture

    India, the world's largest producer of cotton, contains more than 4 million cotton farms that are less than 5 acres. These farms are incapable of large-scale mechanization due to small farm size and irregular farm shape. A previous team developed a handheld, roller-based picking device that demonstrated increased performance over similar products. However, a significant improvement in productivity requires increasing picking speed through mechanization as well as increasing worker cotton carrying capacity. We present a system that utilizes the roller-based picking device in tandem with a compressive storage bag and an efficient carrier. Through modeling and initial testing, the system demonstrates a two times (2X) improvement in worker productivity over current methods. This paper characterizes the cotton picking process, details the modules of the integrated system, and suggests further procedural improvements for greater increases in worker productivity

    Integrating a Patient Care Development Model to Enhance Community Pharmacy Residency Programs

    Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to describe integration of a community-based patient care service development model, Partner for Promotion (PFP), within five community pharmacy residency programs (CPRPs) across the United States and provide insights and examples of methods for optimizing community pharmacy resident experiences, developing new patient care services, and achieving residency accreditation standards. Summary: Five community pharmacy residency programs have integrated PFP that affiliated with Midwestern University – Glendale, Northeast Ohio Medical University, Ohio State University, University of Utah, and West Virginia University. Each college and residency program has identified different strategies through which PFP enhances their residency training and service development including completion of training modules, reflections and discussion on application of the PFP service development model to practice, research, and teaching, use of assignments to guide service creation, and mentoring of PFP student-pharmacist teams. All five sites directly link these activities to objectives required in PGY1 CPRP accreditation standards. PFP has resulted in resident-facilitated service development of a variety of patient care programs. Conclusion: PFP applied to CPRPs enhances training on service development, builds new services within residency training sites, and assists programs with meeting residency accreditation standards. The experiences of five community pharmacy residency programs across the U.S. that have adopted the program has been positive, with creation of new services and residency sites, integration of novel teaching, practice, research, and learning opportunities for residents, and direct links from the PFP experience to achievement of residency objectives.   Type: Idea Pape
